About Us

WELCOME TO CELLAR

Established. 2020

We’re a small group of passionate wine professionals trying to bring some diverse, quality and interesting wines into Hawke’s Bay, and wider New Zealand.

Cellar was started in February 2021 off the back of a pop-up wine store (Deco City Cellars) in Napier CBD.  Deco City Cellars was to test the market and see if other people were as thirsty as we are for great wine.  As it turns out – we were right!  So we found a groovy little place in the Ahuriri village and became a permanent fixture of the wine scene locally.

Between our team, we all have our preferences.  Colin loves natural wine and less mainstream varieties.  Sham is a huge fan girl of local Hawke’s Bay producers, Angela is really keen on classical varieties and wine styles, Rob is all about fortified and unashamebly honest wines and Carl will drink anything!

Tasting Room

Not only do we have an amazing shop, we’ve got space for you to host a tasting or a VIP event.  It’s always there for you to use, free of charge.  Winemakers are always stopping in to use the space, and there’s no reason why you can’t either!

Make sure you’re signed up to our newsletters as we regularly have upcoming events and tastings!

MEET THE TEAM

CARL HAYES

Carl began his career in hospitality working in local Hawke’s Bay winery restaurants (Craggy, Vidals, Black Barn, Sileni). He later began conducting wine tours which is where his love of wine began. He left NZ in 2012 and his background in hospitality saw him working with major Australian restaurant groups in both venue manager and sommelier roles (Merivale, Rockpool Dining Group, Colonial Leisure Group & MADE Establishment).
When returning during 2020 his passion for the wine industry and connecting with people led him to launch Deco City Cellars … and now Cellar Ahuriri.

ROB MACCULLOCH MW

Rob MacCulloch started his career in wine in 1995 and has worked or studied in pretty much every part of the global wine industry since then. From production winemaking to wine selling to the complex bits in-between that make wine get from A to B, there’s not much that Rob hasn’t done in a career that’s encompassed working in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, South Africa and the USA. And then there’s the qualifications – five separate wine qualifications that include Viticulture & Oenology from New Zealand’s Lincoln University and one of only 400-odd Master of Wine qualifications in the world too.

ANGELA SCOTT

Angela is a Philadelphia area native. First exposed to wine as an exchange student in Spain. From there, wine was a constant companion through a dizzying array of experiences including as a Human Rights lawyer, chiefly in Mexico, Ethiopia and Honduras. Discovering slightly better wine during her legal career and truly falling in love with all things vinous, Angela decided to leave the legal world behind to relocate to Napa and work in the trenches of the wine industry. Angela was persuaded to drop the sunny Napa climate and move to the decidedly cooler environs of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand by her winemaker husband (Rob) where she is currently studying for the Master of Wine designation.

COLIN LYON

Introducing Colin, ‘Lord of the Corks’ at Cellar Ahuriri (truly, it’s on his business card).  Colin is a wine enthusiast with an extensive background in retail sales and management.  He began selling fine wines at a boutique in Montclair, New Jersey in 2014 and quickly became enthralled by the expansive world of wine.  He received his WSET Level 3 certification in 2015 and continues to enjoy furthering his education through tasting and discussing wines with fellow wine lovers. Recently he relocated here to Hawke’s Bay and was drawn to our diverse selection of offerings from New Zealand and around the world.  In addition to wine, Colin enjoys craft beer, ciders and spirits and will be working to expand our selections in those categories.).

SHAMEIL (SHAM) LEWIS

Introducing Shameil (Sham). Sham started with Deco City Cellars when we first opened in October as a pop up on Emerson Street. She has a passion for all things wine, (also a lot of gin) and is currently studying viticulture and wine science at EIT. Born in Hawkes Bay, visiting the wineries sparked an interest in winemaking very early on and is now pursuing that dream. Cooking is another love of Shams and she is always experimenting with new wines from the store to pair with her meal.
